Tarpaulin Ocean: An Evening of Cross-Genre Writing with Kim Gek Lin Short, Joe Hall, and Declan Gould

Join us as we welcome three Philly-area writers for an evening of the compressed sounds of poetry and the tugs and pangs of story, with Kim Gek Lin Short, Joe Hall, and Declan Gould

Kim Gek Lin Short is the author of the lyric novels The Bugging Watch & Other Exhibits and China Cowboy, both from Tarpaulin Sky Press. Her cross-genre work has been described as stealing back "for prose both the compressed sounds of poetry and the tugs and pangs of story" and as "strongly reminiscent of the short films of the Brothers Quay." Her chapbook Run was selected for Rope-a-Dope’s Golden Gloves Award and was exhibited at the The Magic Child Repository at Craftland Gallery in Providence. Her debut hybrid collection, The Residents, was published by Chicago's dancing girl press in 2009. Kim’s work in hybrid poetry has earned her a Pushcart Prize nomination and features in anthologies such as Narrative (Dis)Continuties: Prose Experiments by Younger American Writers, &Now Awards, and Electric Gurlesque.

Joe Hall is a co-founder of the publishing collective Hostile Books and author of four books of poetry. His most recent is Someone's Utopia (Black Ocean 2018). He lives between Buffalo and Ithaca, NY.

Declan Gould holds an MFA from Temple University and is an English PhD candidate in the Department of English Poetics program at the University at Buffalo. She is the author of the chapbooks “Like” or “As” (dancing girl press, 2017) Model Figure (Shirt Pocket Press, 2015) and the co-editor of (Dis)Integration: Buffalo Poets, Writers, Artists 2017. Her writing also appears in Jacket2Full StopThe Conversant, Denver Quarterly, Falling in Real Time, and the Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies.
