Ellen Forney: Brilliant Advice from My Bipolar Life

Ellen Forney’s new book, Rock Steady: Brilliant Advice From My Bipolar Life (Fantagraphics 2018), is the eagerly awaited sequel/companion book to her 2012 bestselling graphic memoir, Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and Me. Whereas Marbles was a memoir about her bipolar disorder, Rock Steady turns the focus outward, offering a self-help guide of tips, tricks, and tools by someone who has been through it all and come through all the stronger for it.

Ellen Forney grew up in Philadelphia and has lived in Seattle since 1989. She has been a professional cartoonist/ illustrator since 1992, and also sometimes paints, and dabbles in other artsy pursuits. She teaches Comics at Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts, and she drives a silver 1968 Mercury Cougar.  She collaborated on the National Book Award-winning novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, and was awarded residency fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and Civitella Ranieri. She also curated “Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived & Well-Drawn”, a traveling exhibition about comics and health for the National Library of Medicine, and as a visual artist, she was selected to create two permanent large-scale murals for Seattle’s Capitol Hill light rail station
